William (Bill) Hadigian died peacefully on Thursday, August 15, 2019, at his home in Doylestown. He was 91.
Bill was born on February 9, 1928, in Hartford, Conn., to Gregory and Helen Hadigian, both survivors of the Armenian genocide in Turkey from 1914-1923. He graduated from Hartford High School in 1945 and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1949 with a BS in Math. He completed his first set of actuarial exams and started his career in New York City, where he lived at the YMCA in Brooklyn. He was drafted and served in the U.S. Army from October 30, 1950 to September 25, 1952, attaining the rank of Corporal and serving in JAG (Judge Advocate General). In addition to an honorable discharge, he received the “Army of Occupation Medal in Germany.”
After serving his country, he continued to pass the very difficult actuarial exams. He attained the highest title possible in 1960 by becoming a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries. In 1965, he became a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.
Among the companies he worked for were Coopers and Lybrand, Philadelphia Life, and The Johnson Companies, where he worked with Ted Benna, the creator of the 401K plan.
On May 29, 1976, he married Mrs. Mercea Panfil Mears, a widow with two teenage children, Cynthia and Richard. Mercea and Bill were married 43 years.
Bill met Mercea on a plane flying to the Orient through Richard, who was bored and wanted to play chess. Bill and Mercea spent the rest of the trip together. Bill kept Richard busy playing games and tennis, a small price to pay for a lifetime relationship!
Bill was very healthy throughout his life and enjoyed playing tennis, traveling, and investing. He also was an avid bridge player.
Mercea and Bill travelled extensively. Their travels took them to Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Korea, Australia, the former Soviet Union, Georgia, Armenia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, England, Germany, Spain, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Alaska, Hawaii, and almost every state in the continental US as well as other foreign countries.
In addition to his wife, Mercea, Bill is survived by his step-children, Dr. Cynthia Mears Bacalao and Richard C. Mears, III, and five step-grandchildren, Emily and Andrew Bacalao and Grace Mears, Joy Mears Frizetti and Richard Mears, IV (Ricky). Bill also is survived by his brother, Ed Hadigian, and his sister, Louise Hadigian. He is also survived by Barbara (wife of Albert) Hadigian, and her married daughters (his nieces): Holly Renew, and Betsy Gartland. He was preceded in death by his sister Mary and his brothers Albert and Louis.
A memorial service will be held on October 12, 2019 at Crossing Community Church, 80 Lower Silver Lake Road, Newtown, PA 18940 at 9 a.m. with a continental breakfast following the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Ambassadors Football, Box 847, Twinsburg OH 44087-9921. This is a soccer ministry mission organization that his stepson, Richard, currently serves with.
