Obituary for Elizabeth A. Guttentag

Elizabeth A.  Guttentag
Elizabeth’s long struggle with cancer ended on December 21, 2017 at Pine Run Lakeview in Doylestown, PA in the presence of family and friends.

Born on June 7, 1936 in Coralville IA and raised in Duluth, MN, Elizabeth attended the Manhattan School of Music and studied with Bernard Greenhouse of the Beaux Arts Trio. Elizabeth enjoyed a long career as a professional cellist with the Kansas City Philharmonic, Trenton Symphony, Bucks County Philharmonic, Riverside Symphonia, and numerous recording sessions, including the theme from “Shaft”. She toured the US with Leon Bibb, a supporting act for Bill Cosby, and appeared on the Today Show. Elizabeth taught cello at the Princeton Day School, The George School, gave private lessons in Ewing, NJ, New Hope, PA, and Fountainville, PA, and worked with several area youth orchestras. Elizabeth was a longtime member the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Elizabeth is survived by her husband, David Guttentag, twin sister Catharine Heim and brother Edward Alspach; children Luther Stenvick of Auburn, NY, Garland Lamb of Sonoma, CA, Jennifer Lamb of Elk Grove, CA; step-children Ellen Roper of Venice, FL, Lisa Garrison of NY, NY, Michael Guttentag of Santa Monica, CA, Mark Sobel of Los Angeles, CA, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Donations are requested in lieu of flowers to Musicopia of Philadelphia. Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
